The foundation of the Benedictine monastery influenced the name given to the village. The singing voices of angels – according to legend – gave Engelberg its name.

The founding of the monastery influenced the development of the village to a great extent. Today's seminary school grew out of the former monastery school, and the writers' and painters' schools. In 1815 Engelberg became part of Canton Obwalden. | Growth to tourist resort
The first ascent of the Titlis (1744) and the first spa guests (approx. 1850) were the forerunners of today's tourism. Engelberg has been accessible by road in winter too, since 1931. The construction of cableways and hotels gave us the holiday resort as we know it today.
