| Via Ferrata Graustock 2'661 m | | | | Special features: | A combination of mountain path and partly steep, exposed rock climbs give an excellent, very worthwhile direct ascent of the Graustock. Breathtaking views alternate between the 700m high north face of the Graustock and the Engelberg valley, Trübsee. Next to the cross on the summit a wonderful panorama over Titlis-Spannort-Rigi-Midland-Pilatus and the Bernese Alps, Wetterhörner, Schreckhorn and Finsteraarhorn. A very worthwhile, mediumly-difficult outing for foot-sured ferratatists. | | Dangers: | Large snow cornices can still overhang the ridge, even in early summer. If you choose the wrong route these cornices can get broken off, with danger of falling. Snow bridges over carst areas (cracks in rock) can cave in when stepped on. Particular care should be taken during thunder and lightening. In fog the descent can be difficult to find. | | Departure Point: | The via ferrata goes from the Joch Pass (2,207 m) over the south-east ridge of the Graustock (2,661 m). | | Walk-in: | Via Engelberg-Trübsee cableway, with the chairlift from Trübsee to the Joch Pass. From the Joch Pass a signpost points to the white-blue-white way- markings. Along the south-east ridge of the Graustock to the first rise, approx. 20 m. high. Follow the cable protection to the point "Rot Nollen", 2,309 m. Then continue following again the way-markings up the second rocky rise, approx. 60 m. high. Over grass and rock along the steep cable protection to the Schafberg 2,522 m. Again way-markings lead over stone slabs and scree to the steepest rise yet. Slightly to the left of the main ridge an approx. 80 m exposed pillar of rock stands out. Go over steps and iron rungs to the next high saddle, then follow the path to the end of the rock ridge. Go over the ridge, again cable protected, up to the cross on the summit 2,661 m. | | Descent: | From the summit follow the cable protection again over the ridge back to the marked fork. Further on to the right descend in a southerly direction to the steps, the passage to the Schaftal, following the white-blue-white way-markings. At the 2,324m point you reach the white-red-white way-marking that leads back to the Joch Pass 2,207 m. | | Duration: | Ascent: 2½ h Descent: 1½ h by the direct route to the Joch Pass. | | Altitude difference: | 460 m. | | Equipment: | Complete via ferrata climbing equipment, helmet. | Overnight accommodation: | Berghaus Joch Pass 2,207 m 041 637 11 87 | | Season: | End June to beginning October | | Information: | Cableways: Engelberg-Titlis 041 639 50 50 titlis@titlis.ch Tourist Center 041 639 77 77 welcome@engelberg.ch Mountain guides' office 041 638 02 55 info@bergfuehrer-engelberg.ch | | Equipment hire: | | |
