BENEDICTINE MONASTERY ENGELBERG

For over 900 years, the Benedictine monastery has shaped the history of Engelberg. As a place of silence and prayer, simple pilgrims as well as crowned heads have experienced here as a guest recreation of body, mind and soul. But the monastery is also a place where cultural treasures of more than nine centuries are kept.

900 years of history

Since its foundation in 1120, the abbey has occupied a central position in the Engelberg Valley. Until the French Revolution, the abbot was both spiritual and secular lord of the valley. In 1798, the valley people gained political independence.

Stiftschule

Engelberg Monastery owes its foundation in 1120 to a reformist awakening in Benedictine monasticism. Concentration on the essential questions of life, stability in a community and solid education were central. The important manuscripts from the Engelberg writing school still bear witness to this today. The monastery sees itself as a school of life.

Monastery wine

The vines of the Engelberg monastery grow in a prime location in Wingreis/Engelberg BE (municipality of Twann). The monastery vintner Beat Burkhardt cultivates the monastery plots ambitiously and with great attention to excellent quality. Terroir wines are produced from grapes that are native to Lake Biel.
