Roastery Engelberg

Dorfstrasse 9, 6390 Engelberg

COFFEE AT ITS FINEST
Time for coffee? Looking for a fragrant, fresh ‘cuppa’? Then head for ‘Roastery Engelberg’ located in the Dorfstrasse at the end of the pedestrian zone. Sophia and Oscar Wetterblad roast the coffee beans right in their shop. They also create their own unique blends of beans and serve their customers only the finest coffee.

At „Roastery Engelberg“, located in Engelberg’s Dorfstrasse, drinking coffee is treated as something special. The fragrance of freshly roasted beans is in the air as you enter the carefully decorated shop. The floor is full of sacks of beans newly delivered from faraway places like Peru, Kenya, Guatamala and India. The combination of beans from different continents makes all the difference in creating a fine coffee, explains Oscar Wetterblad. The young Swede, together with his sister Sophia, just opened the roastery last January. Coffee’s “in their blood.” Their father, who owns a coffee plantation in Guatemala, has been in the coffee business for 30 years. It was from him that the siblings learned the art of mixing and roasting coffee beans. „We’ve been roasting beans since we were little,“ tells Sophia Wetterblad.
Counter-trend to capsule machines
Some customers may find it rather odd that Swedes are running the roastery instead of ome stereotypically fiery Brazilian. To Sophia and Oscar, however, it all seems perfectly logical. After all, Nordic countries place first in coffee drinking. Nowhere else in the world do so many people drink as much coffee as in Scandanavia. When Sophia once visited her father’s farm in Guatemala, she noticed that not much emphasis was placed there on the preparation of coffee. “I had been so looking forward to enjoying the finest coffee there, but I was bitterly disappointed,“ she said. “The people there don’t understand at all why their product is in such demand.“
The beans are just one part of the whole secret to producing fine coffee, explained Oscar. “Furthermore, it depends how the bean is roasted, and also which machine is used in brewing the coffee.” With the establishment of the roaster, the brother and sister have tried to initiate a counter-trend to the popular capsule machines. It looks like they’ve been successful in doing so. “The roastery was little more than a hobby project when we opened up in January 2015. Since July I’ve been working at 100%,” said Sophia Wetterblad. In addition to people just passing by, who drop in and buy blends such as “Sunny Side” or “Dark Side”, the young Swedish entrepreneurs also supply hotels and deliver to several offices.
Coffee at its finest
Enjoying a cup of coffee at the “Roastery” is more than just about savoring the taste of Wetterblads’ product—it’s also about appreciating the surroundings in which you drink it. A table made from wooden pallets and chairs made from filled beansacks form the centerpiece of the shop. It’s here where people gather and listen to the stories that Sophia and Oscar tell. What these two know about coffee and its production is amazing and interesting to listen to. Now that’s how to enjoy a cup of coffee!
