Baroque hall Kloster Engelberg, October 28th to 30th, 2016
Dear Chamber Music Lovers,
We are very excited to present the program for the second edition of our chamber music festival "Zwischentöne" ("Nuances") in Engelberg. Audience and critics alike expressed their enthusiasm last October. Headlines in the Neue Luzerner Zeitung "A triumph for musical treasure hunters", "Chamber music: a new world created from new sounds" and a feature in the Neue Zürich Zeitung praised the festival's spirit of musical discovery.
Theme of this year's festival is "Between two Worlds": programs centered around ghosts, heaven and hell, god and the devil, dreams, death and the end of the world. Masterpieces by Beethoven, Schumann, Brahms, Janacek, Hindemith, Stravinsky and Messiaen are paired with contemporary works by György Kurtág, Jörg Widmann, Nicolas Bolens and a premiere by Iris Szeghy.
We are particularly pleased with this year's artist roster which includes acclaimed Mezzosoprano Marie-Claude Chappuis, Hungarian pianists Dénes Várjon and Izabella Simon, Swiss clarinetist Reto Bieri and the illustrious Swiss actor Robert Hunger-Bühler who will recite devilish texts by Bierce, Bulgakov, Kafka and Milton.
The exquisite baroque concert hall of Engelberg's monastery and the alpine village with its beautiful belle époque hotels and stunning mountain scenery provide an ideal setting for the listener to escape the stress of everyday life and immerse himself in the intimate world of chamber music. It is our aim to make the festival a musical "close encounter"; pre-concert lectures allow for a deeper understanding of the works, an open workshop for young and curious listeners will show the inner workings of a string quartet and demonstrate how composers put together their masterpieces, and a post-concert apero will provide an opportunity for conversation with the musicians.
We look forward to three inspiring days in Engelberg!
