Leaving won’t be on the menu!

22 February 2019

Each one of Engelberg’s five most popular mountain restaurants is the perfect place to stop for a break before making your final descent, to wind down a day of hiking, or to while away the afternoon during heavy snowfall. But take heed, gentle skier, sledger, hiker or pleasure-seeker: in these moreish restaurants there is a very real risk that you will stay longer than intended!

Bärghuis Jochpass
This mountain lodge right by the Joch Pass slopes is a delightful spot to take a ski break. With its culinary delights, friendly staff, and convivial atmosphere, Bärghuis Jochpass is our number one choice for rounding off a day of skiing in style. There’s a good chance of the minutes turning to hours here in the cosy Stübli, in the happening Gadä, or on the sunny terrace. Before you know it, the final piste inspection will be starting and you’ll have to race off like Cinderella. Those who have been wise enough to think ahead will have booked themselves a room for the night!

Fürenalp
None of the other mountain restaurants presented here is this close to the majestic Alpine panorama. When you’re sitting on the sunny terrace of the Fürenalp restaurant, 1,850 metres above sea level, you almost feel as if you could reach out and touch the mountains. With its charming, welcoming hosts who serve winter walkers, sledgers, snowshoe hikers and sun worshippers with delicious local specialities, the Fürenalp is a hard place to bid farewell to.

Skihütte Stand
With its rustic atmosphere, beautiful view of the Titlis glacier, and location at the heart of the ski area, this cosy hut on the Stand is a wonderful place to stop for something to eat or drink. Guests can enjoy wholesome, warming food or a decadent treat either inside the hut or outside on its sunny terrace. And now imagine it when there is live Ländler music playing and the three lovely tile stoves are lit! It won’t be easy to tear yourself away.

Flühmatt
The Flühmatt restaurant is famous for its Älplermagronen – the cheesy pasta dish is considered the best for miles around. You can hike here from Engelberg or from the Brunni. The traditional wooden chalet is situated in a sunny spot with an impressive view of the Titlis. After several relaxed hours on the terrace or in the cosy saloon, tucking into the tasty Älplermagronen, you’ll be glad to get your body moving once again on the walk down to Engelberg. We recommend taking along a torch so that you can stay as long as you like and return home after dark in the romantic glow of the flames.

Brunnihütte
When the sun is shining it’s easy to forget time here at the Brunni mountain hut. Situated 1,860 metres above sea level, it is the sunniest mountain restaurant around. As an SAC hut, it welcomes skiers, sledgers, hikers and anyone who has ridden up on the chairlift. Here, you can take a break and enjoy a slice of home-made cake, but those who like to indulge in a lavish après-ski yet also want to be among the first out on the slopes the next morning are well advised to book a bed for the night.

There’s always a good chance of author Andrea Hurschler getting stuck fast at a cosy restaurant or bar. She can’t resist an invitation for a friendly get-together over a Kafi Zwätschgä (coffee with damson liqueur) or two – preferably with the sun upon her face.
