Fürenalp - a gem

Fürenalp is a gem that you should know about. Accessible by a small cable car, the Alp (at 1850 m above sea level) spellbinds visitors with its attractions of nature and its proximity to other mountains. Restaurant Fürenalp adds to the Alp’s popularity as a tourist destination. New: Urs Portmann and his kitchen team are there to provide the culinary delights.

Up on Fürenalp you feel almost close enough to reach out and touch the nearby majestic peaks of Gross and Klein Spannort. Imagine sitting on the sun terrace at Restaurant Fürenalp and enjoying the combination of a spectacular view, regional food and a delicious Kafi Schnaps – what could be more heavenly? Since December 2015 the restaurant has been under the new management of Urs Portmann, who took over the task from his longtime predecessor Vreni Hurschler. "I am proud to be the new host of Restaurant Fürenalp," says Urs Portmann. He finds it wonderful being able to pursue his passion for cooking amidst the magnificent natural surroundings of Fürenalp.

Cooking in the mountains

Working in a mountain environment is nothing new to the skilled cook. For the last 16 years the native Obwaldner has served as executive chef of catering operations for Bergbahnen Engelberg-Trübsee-Titlis AG. Portmann, father of two children, completed his culinary training in Melchsee-Frutt. Afterwards, he cooked in resort areas such as St. Moritz or Zermatt. He is familiar with the element of water not only in its frozen form. "After my first work experiences in Switzerland I worked on a small passenger ship for several years, traveling the world's oceans," he said.  That was the beginning of his career as a chef. Prior to his employment with Titlis, he and his wife ran a restaurant in the Bavarian Forest.

Regional specialties

At Restaurant Führenalp Urs Portmann and his team serve classic Chalet-style dishes with tradition in mind, while also surprising guests by varying the menu with other specialties. "It is important to me to work with suppliers from Engelberg and the surrounding area,” claims Portmann, who is committed to using fresh, local produce. This restaurant on the mountain is not only a great place for ‘recharging’ after a winter’s walk or sledding, but also for hosting family celebrations and big group occasions. "Each event should be an experience," says Urs Portmann, "I like to come up with something special, taking the ideas and wishes of our guests into account."
