A great and varied day tour. The way down along the Aaschlucht is easy to do. The way from Rugisbalm back to Engelberg, on the other hand, is demanding.

From Engelberg you first hike through the wild and romantic Aa gorge down into the valley. From Grafenort there is a short descent to the Buiräbähnli Mettlen-Rugisbalm-Lutersee, which will take you comfortably to the top. From Rugisbalm you go to the idyllic Lutersee and then through meadows and forests back to Engelberg. The hike can also be done the other way round.

Author’s recommendation

Those who do not like to walk downhill can also do the hiking route in reverse. The panorama is more special with start from Aa gorge.

Turn-by-turn directions

The path from Engelberg down along the Aaschlucht is easy to master. Along the entire Aaschlucht, various picnic areas invite you to take a rest. Arrived in Grafenort, you take the 1st Buiräbähnli, which brings you from Mettlen to Ruggisbalm. Afterwards you take another Buiräbähnli up to Eggendössli. From there the more demanding hike to the Lutersee and back to Engelberg begins. Between the Lutersee and Engelberg you have the possibility to take a break at the Alp Zingel.
