Routes & Stages

The entire route of the Buiräbähnli Safari hike covers 46 kilometres and around 3700 metres in altitude. It is therefore the perfect multi-day hike for a long weekend. Below you will find all the stages in detail.

Buiräbähnli

Let the little Buiräbähnli in the Engelberg Valley take you up the mountain and start your hike or bike tour with a little adventure. Below you will find an overview of the individual railways and leisure activities.

Diegisbalm cable car

Area

The Nechimatt-Diegisbalm cable car takes you from Wolfenschiessen in just a short journey time high above the Engelberg valley, in the middle of a beautiful and peaceful hiking area. Here you can enjoy a relaxing time off the beaten track in the magnificent mountain world.

METTLEN - RUGISBALM

Area

The cable car runs on demand: you sit down in it and register by phone, whereupon a member of the Töngi family sets the gondola in motion. At 872 m above sea level, you can also use the second section of the Lutersee cable car or start your tour from here to the Lutersee or on a section of the Stanserhorn-Engelberg ridge walk.

RUGISBALM - LUTERSEE

Area

If you want to save even more metres in altitude on the way to the Lutersee, take the second section of the Lutersee cable car, which takes you up to around 1400 metres. Once you have reached the top, you will be greeted by a beautiful mountain and alpine landscape with a magnificent view high above the Engelberg valley.

BÜELEN

Area

The Büelen mountain area is located at 1100 metres and can be reached via the Büelen cable car. The area is mainly visited by paragliders and has a small car park at the Geissmattli valley station. Otherwise, the mountain railway can also be reached in 15 minutes from the central railway stop Grafenort.

Oberalp

Area

The organic mountain farm Oberalp is located on the sunny side of the Engelberg Valley at 1413 m above sea level and belongs to the municipality of Wolfenschiessen. You can reach it from the valley with two cable cars. The mountain home has been inhabited all year round for three generations. The Arnold family of mountain farmers attaches great importance to animal-friendly husbandry and manages the steep mountain slopes with Rhaetian grey cattle.

Buiräbähnlipass

Available here

The pass includes travel on 8 Buiräbähnli in the Engelberg Valley. The rides can be taken on different days and do not have to be completed "in one piece".

Brändlen cable car

Area

The track is always open. Summer and winter, day and night. There is no timetable, the train always runs when there are guests. Call the valley station with your phone, get on and off you go. If no one answers the phone, it's self-service.

SCHMIEDSBODEN

Area

The railway is in operation all year round in summer and winter. To get started, call Mrs Wicki-Waser at the station using the installed telephone. She will then operate the cable car and transport you safely up and down.

Fell - Spiess

Area

The cable car is in operation all year round in summer and winter. To get started, you have to call Mr. Durrer using the telephone installed at the station. He will then operate the cable car and transport you safely up or down.

SPIES - SINSGÄU

BORD-BAHN

Area

The Bord cable car can be reached on foot from the village centre in about 30 minutes. (Railway station - monastery - Wydenstrasse - Kilchbüel or via Grottenweg) The train goes up to Untere Bord, from where you can hike comfortably in 30 minutes to Flühmatt or in 45 minutes up to Ristis.

Accommoda­tion

The hike starts and ends in Engelberg. You can choose from numerous rustic accommodations along the route. If you prefer a comfortable hotel, you can also stay overnight in Engelberg and hike the individual sections as one-day stages.
