Discover the heart of Central Switzerland

Engelberg lies at the heart of Central Switzerland and stretches from 1,000 to 3,020 metres above sea level. The municipality belongs to the canton of Obwalden and is easily accessible both nationally and internationally. Engelberg is about an hour’s drive from Zurich Airport and just 40 minutes from Lucerne.

With a population of around 4,400, Engelberg combines the intimate atmosphere of a village with significant tourist appeal. The town records over 800,000 overnight stays annually, making it one of the most important holiday and leisure destinations in Central Switzerland.

The economic structure is clearly dominated by tourism: 76.2% is accounted for by the service sector, whilst 15.6% is attributable to trade and 8.2% to agriculture and forestry.

History and Culture

The key points at a glance

Engelberg looks back on a monastic history spanning over 900 years. To this day, the Benedictine monastery continues to shape the cultural life and traditions of the valley.

The history of the town dates back to 1120, when Konrad von Sellenbüren founded the Benedictine monastery. The first ascent of the Titlis took place in 1744. Since the French Revolution, Engelberg has been an enclave within the canton of Obwalden. From 1912 onwards, the Titlis area was developed with funiculars and cable cars. In 1992, the TITLIS ROTAIR, the world’s first rotating cable car, opened, followed by the TITLIS Xpress in 2015.
