Surenen Pass with small cable cars
Engelberg-Titlis Tourismus Verified partner
Two small cable cars, in between one of the most impressive mountain pass hikes in Central Switzerland: With the Fürenalp cable car from Engelberg and the Brüsti aerial cableway down to Attinghausen, the Surenen Pass becomes a great day hike with slightly less elevation, but with lots of landscape, openness, and the Obsi+Nidsi feeling. The historic crossing is part of the Via Alpina and connects Engelberg with the Urner Reusstal.
Already the ride up to Fürenalp whets your appetite for more. At the top, the hike begins in the middle of an open, wild mountain landscape. The path leads over alpine terrain towards Blackenalp, past mountain streams, pastures, and the impressive backdrop of the Surenen valley. It quickly becomes clear here: This tour is not an ordinary crossing but a real mountain experience with lots of peace, vastness, and character.
After Blackenalp, the path steadily continues to rise. Over Unter Schatzboden, it goes up to the Surenen Pass, where the view opens up to Titlis, the Schächentaler Alps, Urnersee, and Reusstal. It is precisely this contrast between green alpine meadows, rugged pass landscape, and wide panorama that makes the hike so special.
The descent leads over Langschnee, Angistock, Geissrüggen, and Alp Grat towards Brüsti. In alpine summer, several mountain huts and alpine farms invite you to stop for a break along the way, and the Surenen cheese dairy is also on the route. At the end, you comfortably descend with the Brüsti aerial cableway down to Attinghausen – a fitting conclusion to a hike that shows how well big adventures and small cable cars fit together.
Small cable cars on this tour:
- Fürenalp cable car
- Brüsti
Author’s recommendation
- If you want to ease the long original stage from Engelberg to Attinghausen somewhat, this combination of cable cars is exactly right: The full route is significantly longer, with Fürenalp and Brüsti it becomes a doable, yet still alpine day hike. There is a combined ticket for both aerial cable cars.
- As a charming alternative to the Fürenalp cable car, you can start at the Fürenalp valley station and after approx. 1 hour 20 minutes you reach the Stäfeli–Äbnet aerial cableway (this option is about 1 hour longer)

Safety information
On the section at Langschnee, you should definitely stay on the marked path; due to possible rockfall danger, caution is expressly advised there. Before the tour, it is also worthwhile to check the current conditions and the cable car operation.
