Snowshoe trails
Well-marked snowshoe trails offer you the opportunity to explore Engelberg's pristine terrain. Rental equipment is available in the local sports shops or directly at the cable car stations. All you need to bring is a bit of fitness, waterproof boots, breathable clothing and small backpack for a drink, sun protection and, if necessary, a change of clothes.
Snowshoe trail Engelberg-Ristis

Beautiful but strenuous snowshoeing route to the Berglodge Ristis with the possibility of a stopover at the Bergrestaurant Flühmatt. The snowshoeing offers a unique view of Engelberg and the Titlis.
The route starts at Engelberg train station and runs through Dorfstrasse past the Tourist Information to the Engelberg Monastery. From there, take the wide stone staircase that begins to the left of the monastery church. At the top, follow a left curve on the street before the path turns right. From there it gets steep. Up to the mountain station of the Klostermatte ski lift, the path is still wider and runs over open fields. When you reach the station, the snowshoe trail branches left into the forest. The snow-covered firs and the crunch of snow under your shoes make you forget the elevation gain, and once at the top, the view over Engelberg almost takes your breath away. Now you have earned a break. The cozy, all-wood Bergrestaurant Flühmatt invites you to linger.
Then the path continues along the edge of the forest, with the majestic Titlis rising behind you. It is worth pausing again and again, turning around and enjoying the breathtaking view. The sight gives new energy, and even tired legs are forgotten in the beauty of nature.
After a well-deserved break on the sunny terrace of the cozy Bergrestaurant Ristis, you finally take the gondola down into the valley. The way back to the train station, the starting point, is comfortably done with the free sport bus.
Author’s recommendation
The Bergrestaurant Flühmatt is known for its genuine Engelberger Älplermagronen – so bring your appetite on your winter hiking trip.
